Case #1. Private Banking — Cost Control and Management

Large private banks often have their cost management process out of control. Managers understand that the budget is depleted when it is too late. Expenses in the banking sphere should be as low as possible, that’s why they need to be constantly managed, which should at least prevent unsustainable use of the available funds, including by establishing reasonable means of control. Storm business intelligence system has the power to do it.
  • Step 1 Reporting automation

Strom can be used for data aggregation. For these purposes, we added a set of dashboards and a PDF reporting feature. PRF reports may include general data on expenditures over a certain period of time compared to the allocated budget and can be sent to top management.
  • Step 2 Drill Down Analytics

Drill down analytics tool allows to automate cost and budget management over a certain period of time.
  • Step 3 Cost Control

Now, managers of each bank unit receive a detailed report at the end of the month, as well as notices on major events.
  • Step 4. Unified Control System

The result was a cost control system which cut the bank’s costs by 18% and increased its profits by 40%.

Storm was successfully integrated into the organization, and the company achieved all the objectives. The cost control system allowed to optimize costs and significantly save the company's employees time. Thanks to that, the bank managed to increase the number of its initiatives by 7%, while top management received full control over expenses of their employees.

Case #2. Private Banking — Profitability Analysis

A large private bank (10 branches worldwide) analyzed its profitability using an outdated technology which implied a large share of manual calculations to ensure accuracy of all data over the entire reporting period. Collection of data for a summary quarterly report took several weeks. The probability of error was high.
  • Step 1. Easy Integration

Storm allowed the bank’s employees to connect to all banking operations stored in DB2 ISeries in real time.
  • Step 2Easy Data Access

The bank’s employees had an opportunity to unite, sum up, group, and filter all types of banking fees and profits.
  • Step 3 Transparent Reporting

The result was about 20 dashboards which displayed consolidated profitability filtered by any criteria with an option to view any detailed information.
  • Step 4 Access From Anywhere In The World

PDF reports are automatically generated and sent to users in over 10 branches around the world.

The information report in PDF format generated using Storm is now considered critical information for all employees of the bank, starting with top management and financial department and ending with every portfolio manager. We’ve managed to eliminate all routine and manual operations for report generation and ensure fault-free and accurate financial data.

Case #3. Private Banking — Credit and Concentration Risks

One branch of a large private bank calculated credit and concentration risks partially using the central system and partially with shady IT solutions. Many types of risks were just left out, and some data was far from accurate. It was virtually impossible to adhere to the group recommendations on calculation and risk indicators. The branch had a high probability of heavy losses in their credit portfolio.
  • Step 1 Calculation of Complex Risks

By using Storm as their real-time BI tool, the bank’s employees can easily calculate very complex types of risk taking into account all obligations and guarantees of the parties.
  • Step 2 Clear Breakdown into Indicators

Storm calculates over 20 types of risk with a clear and transparent classification of indicators.
  • Step 3 Automation

Assessment of assets and liabilities, including all types of customer risk in the worst-case scenario, and their comparison to the agreed credit lines is now 100% automated.
  • Step 4 Real-time Risk Monitoring

At the same time, Storm performs continuous risk monitoring and analysis for all contractors, markets, and currencies.

Now, it takes just a few minutes to check out 5,000 portfolios to calculate the potential risk limit. Moreover, Storm has saved hundreds of working hours of the credit risk specialist and the portfolio manager. Thanks to accurate risk calculations, the bank has improved its management performance by 27%.

Case #4. Consolidated Reporting With Storm

The Board of Directors of a financial company spent a lot of time and human resources on their quarterly reports. Five employees were engaged in report generation, and a lot of time was wasted on examination of those reports. Reporting and verification process took one month, while data was not always relevant and error-free.
  • Step 1 Prompt report generation

Integration of Storm with pre-customized reports into the company eliminated the need in constant verification and reduced report generation down to one working day.
  • Step 2 Verification

Storm reports were verified against manual data. All data corresponded to each other, which meant that the system worked properly and could be introduced in the company.
  • Step 3 New Reporting System

Now, reporting takes several minutes instead of a month, and all necessary reports are now automatically e-mailed to the employees. The management can now obtain the most relevant and accurate reports at any time.

Work, which used to take a month and waste time of the key employees, can now be done in just a few steps and takes only a few seconds.

Case #5. Evaluating Financial Advisors’ Performance

A company faced the problem of controlling performance of its financial advisors. Inaccurate evaluation of their performance resulted in wrong managerial and financial decisions. The standard procedures included assessment of the number of customers for each advisor.
  • Step 1 Problem Recognition

Storm found out that the established assessment methods did not correspond to the results obtained, that’s why we suggested adjusting the performance evaluation system.
  • Step 2 Review of Performance Evaluation

We suggested assessing the difference between the cash flow generated by the customers of each advisor.
  • Step 3 Advisor A Performance Evaluation

Thanks to the adjusted evaluation system and data analysis performed using Storm, the head of a department found out that Advisor A lost two and retained nine customers over the year. However, those two customers were key accounts and generated very high cash flow, while the retained customers were rather small.
  • Step 4 Advisor B Performance Evaluation

Advisor B lost five and retained three customers. All lost customers were small, while two of the three retained ones were very large and were the key accounts of the company.

Hence, it is easy to conclude that Advisor B was much more efficient and produced a higher profit for the company. On the contrary, the old evaluation system would lead to the opposite — wrong — decision.

Case #6. Private Banking — Asset Management System

A private bank didn’t have a management information system (MIS) in place. Neither did it have a modern investment portfolio data scan tool which could detect business opportunities and events, as well as warn of operational risks.
  • Step 1 Data Storage Adjustment

The bank’s data storage was adjusted to keep daily static customer data, information on security service operations, investment portfolios, orders, transactions, remittances, accounting records, and other events related to asset management.
  • Step 2 BI System Launch

With Storm Connect, we promptly launched a real-time BI system which provided granular information on all processes of the bank.
  • Step 3. Unified Data Display System

In just three months, we created 50 dashboards in the Storm template editor which display all necessary data on the company’s operations.
  • Step 4 KPI Tracking and Protection Against Financial Losses

We created powerful widgets to demonstrate KPIs to all managers, to detect potentially successful financial opportunities, as well as a widget for monitoring of operational errors and fraud prevention.

Storm has become a vital system for top management, financial unit, and customer relations managers across all departments of the bank.

Case #7. Fiduciary Reporting — Financial Performance Release

A major IT company had been developing a fiduciary reporting system for over 30 years. Despite a large set of various types of reports in the system, fiduciaries had certain issues regarding data export to Excel, as well as preparation, printing, and e-mailing of personal messages to their customers.
  • Step 1 Cloud Database

We created a cloud system which allows to record fiduciary funds to publish interim and final books of accounts in the central repository.
  • Step 2 Easy Data Display

Storm has become an essential tool for the accountant for development of a dashboard which displays all necessary indicators for the customers.
  • Step 3 Instant Data Access

The owner, top management, and financial department of the company have a remote access to the dashboards shared by the accountant.

As a result, Storm helped the fiduciary save time, eliminate manual data processing, and most importantly, improved corporate image. Now the customer can monitor financial performance in real-time.
